but only after it's spayed or neutered.
Left on their own, two stray (feral) cats today can mean 24 cats in one year; 576 cats in two years; 13,824 cats in three years; and 331,776 cats in four years. That’s a lot of cats.
Over the past several years, even though volunteers in the city have trapped stray cats for sterilization, it’s never been enough to make a real dent in the stray cat population resulting in an over abundance of strays today.
During the past few months, Lindsay Donzanti, a former City employee and now a Cat Network volunteer, and her friends have trapped, neutered and released more than 30 cats. And during a recent weekend, Lindsay orchestrated a Spayathon when her friends and volunteers from The Cat Network (many of whom traveled from South Miami), trapped 55 cats.
The Cat Network sent their Meow Mobile (a mobile surgical unit) 30 miles north to Sunny Isles Beach where Dr. Marc Kramer and his surgical assistant Eliana carried out a staggering 62 sterilizations.
This project is carried out with the cooperation of the City of Sunny Isles Beach Community Development Department who recognizes and thanks Dr. Kramer and his assistant Eliana, as well as the following volunteers who helped make this Spayathon such a fantastic success:
Lindsay Donzanti, Suely Caramelo, Jelena and Eric Appell, Yatir Nitzany, Charlene Grall, Susan Sonson, George Silverglad, Raymond Donzanti, Fader Reichard, Bonnie Askary, David Mann, Wendy Friedman and “Frank” who ferried the cats from all parts of the city to the Spayathon.
There are plans for another Spayathon on Sunday, October 11, 2009 when again volunteers will trap the feral cats and the public can avail themselves of low cost ($40) sterilization for their cats.
