After a long hot summer of lounging on the beach, surfing, playing volleyball, and building castles, volunteers show their gratitude…
The 2009 Florida Coastal Cleanup took place on September 19th, 2009 and was part of the 24th Annual International Coastal Cleanup coordinated by the Ocean Conservancy and supported by Robert Allen Law and the City of Sunny Isles Beach.
Thirty-one sites were cleaned in Miami-Dade County including our own Pier Park. Over 60 people worked hard to be part of this worldwide effort to clean and protect the environment by eliminating debris that injures wildlife, contaminates our beaches and waterways, which also threatens swimmers safety. Local volunteers joined this effort and by recording their results on data cards they were able to be part of a major scientific study of solid waste issues.
The International Coastal Cleanup was the largest marine volunteer effort in the world with over 3,500 volunteers participating in Miami-Dade County alone.
Robert Allen Law is the Miami-Dade Coastal Cleanup partner and the entire firm volunteers their time. “The goal of the cleanup is to plant a consciousness in people,” said Allen. “Miami is defined by its glitz more than its commitment to the long term. If we can focus Miami’s abundant means on how we interact with the ocean and design our policies to preserve what we have, then we will be a responsible community with a conscience.”
We want to give a special thank you to all the volunteers who generously donated their time for such a worthy cause as well as the organizations that participated; Sierra Club Miami, Students for Environmental Action FIU, City Year Miami, and the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce Miami.
