Life in the City

By Bari Auerbach

Bringing Sexy Back’
Sunny Isles Beach Mayor Norman Edelcup recently wrote a column urging citizens to “Be Counted” when 2010 census questionnaires are mailed or delivered to every household…And in neighboring Aventura, a city commissioner hopes to persuade more people to respond by using the slogan “The Census is Sexy.” But just imagine what could get accomplished if it was considered sexy to do other things besides fill out census forms…

"Doing Laundry is Sexy” – If more guys thought they’d get a higher paying job by not wearing the same clothes (repeatedly thrown on the floor), condo laundry rooms would get a lot busier - along with social lives!

“Voting is Sexy” – Local elections typically have low voter turnout – but if a new law was enacted banning elected officials indicted for public corruption from ever running again, more people might be motivated to cast a ballot.

Shopping is Sexy” – Supporting goals to stimulate the economy, ladies who are frequent shoppers know getting an exceptional bargain on a pair of designer shoes can be even more exciting than anticipating the sequel to the Sex and the City movie!

“Going Green is Sexy” – The city always promotes participation in “go green” initiatives – so while you may see more people being environmentally conscious, don’t expect to find any Sports Illustrated swimsuit issues in recycling bins.

‘The Shuttle is Sexy” – More people might be encouraged to take the Sunny Isles Beach shuttle around town - if the city made the fleet sexier by putting Mercedes or BMW logos on the back bumpers

“Is Sunny Isles Beach Sexy?” – Maybe, if “sun and sea” define sexy - but since this is a family community, it might be better to borrow the original slogan deeming the 2010 census “easy, important and safe.” After all, it’s “easy” to see why when making an “important” decision about where to live, it’s “safe” to say Sunny Isles Beach is the best choice – and that’s something you can really count on!
