By Bob Welsh, Vice President School Trust Fund
In the infancy of the city, prior to the establishment of the Public Works and the Human Resources Departments, a private group headed by Attorney Herbert Abramson of Poinciana Island formed the S.I.B. Cultural, Beautification, and Civic Trust. It was to act as the impetus and catalyst for citizens to bring their ideas for the new city to a public forum, and to develop a “trust fund” for seeding these ideas in public works.
Herb Abramson reached out to developers, engineers, architects, and contractors for funding. The members of the “Trust” surveyed the community at large and consulted individual citizens through meetings and articles in the local papers. The first project that was successful and received kudos from the city was the plantings in the medians on Collins Ave.
The disbanding of the “Trust” was inevitable when the City of Sunny Isles Beach, under Mayor Edelcup’s leadership, had established the agencies, policies, and procedures required to move forward on the very same issues. Attorney Abramson asked the Board of Directors of the “Trust” to donate the remaining monies of over $1,100.00 to the S.I.B. K-8 Community School Fund. The Directors voted unanimously for this proposal.
The community at large expresses it’s gratitude to Herb Abramson and the rest of the Directors of the Sunny Isles Beach Cultural, Beautification, and Civic Trust for their initiatives and dedication to improving the lives of our residents and visitors. The School Trust Fund and The Principal are grateful for the generous donation.
