Featuring Katherine Alexander of the New World School of the Arts

By: Stephanie DeThomas, Public Information/Events Specialist

The City of Sunny Isles Beach presents “An Evening of Classical Music, Italian Opera and Modern Ballads,” with Katherine Alexander from the New World School of the Arts from 7:30 to 9:00 pm, on Saturday, June 5, 2010.
Katherine Alexis Alexander was born on November 30, 1989 in Miami, Florida. As a small child she enjoyed watching operas with her family. At the age of 2, after seeing Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” she jumped off the couch, her arms wide open and mimicking Madama Butterfly, she sang her very first opera note.

As Katherine grew up she became very shy and reserved. Her father, a law enforcement officer, died in an automobile accident, which caused Katherine to become more withdrawn and introverted. However, being around her family seemed to bring out her happiness and her love for singing. She continued to sing in elementary school. She attended several magnet schools pursuing their vocal programs. At the age of 16 she traveled to New York City with her school and sang at Carnegie Hall. At the age of 17 she was awarded a gold medal in vocal/classical competition which led her to Michigan for additional performances. Although she has a talent for various musical genres, she prefers the mystique of Opera.

Katherine Alexander is an Honors Student, sanctioned on the Dean’s List at the New World School of the Arts in Miami. She is a Mezzo Soprano and most recently, after an intense audition process, has been selected to play the role of the Zia Principessa, a lead role from Puccini’s Opera Suor Angelica. This role will take her to Italy where she will participate in the Italian Operatic Experience. This program entails 41 days in Montecatini-Terme, Tuscany where chosen students will be submersed in the country’s culture and origins of opera by means of vocal training with renowned professors, opera workshops, excursions, and Italian language classes.

Katherine’s greatest aspiration is to become a world-renowned opera singer in hopes of reviving culture, passion and allure in today’s music.
