Sneak Preview of Heritage Park for Residents

By Stephanie DeThomas, Public Information and Events Specialist

Have you driven or walked past the new site for Heritage Park, just north of the Lehman Causeway, but wondered what it will look like and what features will it have? Well read on for a sneak preview of this wonderful new park for residents.

Slated to open in January 2011, Heritage Park will offer residents a gathering place to listen to music, take a stroll on the walking path, let your children play in the playground areas or take fluffy and fido to the new dog park. The park size was increased thanks to a donation of the easement of one acre of land by the property owner at Ocean Reserve.

Park amenities will include: a performance stage and dance floor; a walking path around the entire park, the exterior of which can be accessed outside of the operating hours of 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., 7 days per week; a covered pavilion; 2 separate playground areas, one for 2-4 year olds and one for 5-12 year olds; 2 sets of swings; seat walls throughout; lush landscaping with many trees; large great lawn for gathering; pathway lighting; lightning prediction system; security cameras; restrooms and drinking fountain; and metered public parking for up to 100 cars.

The park and restrooms will be secured and locked outside of the operating hours of 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., 7 days per week.

The dog park will have the same operating hours as the general park but will have a separate entrance.  Dogs will not be permitted in the general (or main) park area.

Heritage Park will be home of the Sunny Isles Beach Jazz Fest in 2011 and to many concerts and outdoor events for city residents.

Heritage Park will also feature a Heritage Wall that will honor the city’s veterans. Commissioner Gerry Goodman invites veterans to contact him at Sunny Isles Beach Government Center for inclusion of their names at the Heritage Wall. There will be a special dedication ceremony for the Heritage Wall and honoring all the city’s veterans. He may be reached at 305.792.1752.
