Where in the World is the Sunny Isles Beach Sun?

Perhaps at Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska

Mike Turchy, Susan Simpson, Lois and Tony Turchy, and Lisa Mallonn pose with a copy of the Sunny Isles Beach Sun Community Newspaper at the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska.  The trip was in celebration of Lois and Tony’s 60th Wedding Anniversary.

Mendenhall is the most easily accessible glacier in Alaska. The 12 mile long glacier is located near the capital city of Juneau. The Juneau Icefield Research Program has studied the local glaciers since 1942 and has calculated that the Mendenhall glacier has retreated over 2.5 miles (4.0 km) since 1500. The scientists predict that the glacier will continue to retreat in the foreseeable future.

The United States Forest Service administers the Mendenhall Glacier from the first US Forest Service visitor center built in the nation. This visitor center is the only one in the United States within a half mile of a terminal glacier that calves icebergs into a lake. Located in part of Tongass National Forest, the center is open year-round receiving close to 500,000 visitors each year. Dedicated in 1963, the center originally served pie and coffee to local residents and visitors. Currently, conservation education programs are offered, instead of pie, for all age groups.

You too can appear in an issue of the paper. When you travel, take a copy of the Sunny Isles Beach Sun newspaper with you, pose with the paper in front of a landmark or with your group. Send the photo with the highlights of your trip to the address below. If you would like your original photograph returned, include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your correspondence.
