(April 14, 2015) – Sunny Isles Beach cheerleaders experience what it’s like to win 1st Place in this year’s FCDA (Florida Cheerleading & Dance Association) Cheerleading and Dance Competition that took place on Saturday, March 21st at Coral Springs Gymnasium.
After the announcement for runner-up, a collective gasp radiated throughout the crowd of hopeful parents and visibly anxious cheerleaders. The competition judges, with all their keen experience and knowledge in identifying performance perfection, are equally skilled at maintaining an impartial posture. They are impossible to read. A score sheet is handed over to the announcer. The flick of the microphone is unusually loud as it echoes throughout a gymnasium consumed by an immense silence. The final announcement bellows throughout for all to hear. “In First Place for Recreational Mini Division–The City of Sunny Isles Beach, Starlets!” Cheers of joy erupt. Cheerleaders donned in their custom shades of blue and silver topped with hair bows laced in sequins are now swarmed by proud coaches and parents. A picture perfect moment assured to be remembered for a lifetime.
The announcement made in this year’s competition is not unfamiliar to City of Sunny Isles Beach Cheerleaders. This is the second consecutive year that the squad has achieved 1st Place success. Naturally, with every acclaimed award comes greater expectation. Lofty expectations that have become the culture of Sunny Isles Beach sports. However, no matter the outcome during competition, the ultimate goal of the Cheerleading & Dance program, as in all City sports, is to introduce girls and boys to an exciting sport, build relationships and have fun!
Sunny Isles Beach Cheerleading & Dance is offered through the Cultural & Community Services Department. The program takes place throughout the school year, September – May, in sessions of ten or twelve weeks. Practice days and times vary each session but are typically after school between the hours of 4:30 – 6:30 pm, Tuesday – Thursday. There are also a variety of Cheerleading & Dance camps and clinics that are offered during Winter, Spring, and Summer breaks.
