Election Year Brings Change

By George “Bud” Scholl, Mayor

(Saturday, November 3, 2018) – This November we prepare for another election year, which brings change to our City Commission. Commissioners Jeanette Gatto and Isaac Aelion have served the maximum of two four-year terms as City Commissioners and their seats are now up for election. Throughout the last eight years, I have had the privilege of working alongside these two individuals who have both made positive and noteworthy contributions in our community.

Jeanette Gatto could always be counted on to advocate for her constituents even when they may not have been the majority. As demographics in her district changed from retired seniors to growing families, she ensured that all sides were represented on City issues. Her extensive marketing knowledge helped propel and showcase the City’s brand and image to the world. Commissioner Gatto was the driving force behind enhancing communication to residents through transitioning the SIBislander from a quarterly to a monthly edition mailed to each household. She played a major role in finding a solution for the relocation of the skate park, focused on providing the popular activity for the youth while preserving the quality of life for nearby residents. She was always on the search for new and innovative ways to provide a peaceful and enjoyable experience for condo dwellers.

With a vast knowledge of world affairs and international travel, along with a proficiency in communicating in multiple languages, Isaac Aelion was the ultimate Sister City ambassador. He consulted with staff on hosting international delegations, even greeting our visiting dignitaries at the airport at any time of day or night. It was his knowledge and flawless memory of City affairs that made him the most gracious host. Commissioner Aelion’s engineering and business experience provided him with a unique perspective on all City ventures. He was thoughtful, looking at all sides of an issue and sharing those thoughts to ensure understanding of his position amongst residents.

The two newly elected commissioners will have big shoes to fill given the outstanding contributions of their predecessors. Please join me in wishing Commissioners Gatto and Aelion all the best in their future endeavors and thank them for their dedicated service to our City over the past eight years.
