(Monday, January 2, 2017) – Our Police Department is one of the best and they have proven themselves time and again. The month of November was again a standout month. The scheduled Gateway Park Pedestrian Overpass required a full westbound Sunny Isles Blvd/826 closure on the same night as a planned peaceful protest. Due to the proactive policing by SIBPD, the City was able to learn of the demonstration in advance and work with the organizers to ensure it remained peaceful. All of the preparations by our Police Department kept our community safe while others were provided the opportunity to respectfully exercise their first amendment right of free speech. Our Police Department was recognized by NBC6 news for their ability to manage the situation. “Props to @ CityofSIB for adapting quickly to protestors and a fluid route along Collins Avenue on a very busy night,” was posted and retweeted on social media.
