Florida Department of Law Enforcement Hall of Fame Sunny Isles Beach Police Chief Fred A. Maas

Chief Fred Maas Inducted into Law Enforcement Officers’ Hall of Fame

By Jeanette Gatto, Commissioner

(Thursday, June 28, 2018) – The residents of Sunny Isles Beach know that our Police Chief, Fred Maas, is a very special person. He serves with integrity, compassion and humility. His main priority is always our safety. He will personally help anyone with a problem, large or small, and never hesitates to get out there to direct traffic when needed. His leadership skills are legendary in Miami-Dade County. In fact, there is an award named in his honor for individuals in the law enforcement community who embody leadership and inspire others, the Fred Maas Law Enforcement Leadership Award.

So, it came as no surprise when we learned that Chief Maas was one of five officers in the state to be inducted into the Florida Law Enforcement Officers’ Hall of Fame, the highest award given to a law enforcement officer. The City Commission, along with a few staff members and police officers, attended a very moving ceremony at the state capital in Tallahassee on May 19. Chief Maas’ humble speech of gratitude left tears in the eyes of some audience members. Later that evening at a special celebratory dinner, I had the honor of presenting him with an award on behalf of the Commission, staff, Police Department and residents to show our gratitude to the man who has served our City for 20 years. Having his family present made it that much more special.

Our congratulations go to Chief Fred Maas for achieving this once in a lifetime honor. We are very lucky and proud to have him as our Chief of Police.
