A message from the Mayor Larisa Svechin

Statement from Mayor Larisa Svechin on Holocaust Remembrance Day

(Friday, January 27, 2023) – Today the City of Sunny Isles Beach commemorates International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 78th anniversary of the liberation of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. We reflect on those who suffered unspeakable atrocities, including the many Holocaust survivors in the South Florida area and Sunny Isles Beach. As we remember our painful past, we are also reminded of the strength of the human spirit to confront it.

6,000,000 were murdered effecting all Jewish families who live with the memories and reminders of the pain and sorrow. My late father hid from the Nazis with his four siblings, while his two eldest brothers fought at the front. My great grandmother and great aunt risked their lives to bake and deliver matzo on Passover for Soviet Jewish soldiers. I lost my grandfather and uncle. And there are countless other stories of the brave men and women who lived through this horrific tragedy. Let us never forget. Never forget their stories. #NeverAgain

Together, we stand in solemn remembrance, and commit to condemning anti-Semitism here at home and around the world. It is our responsibility to teach our children this history so that it may never happen again.
