(Wednesday, March 29, 2017) – In 1997 the City of Sunny Isles Beach became an incorporated municipality and elected its first City Commission. One of the members of that first Commission was Lila Kauffman. I had the pleasure of knowing Lila. She was smart, fun and energetic. She had a passion for the arts, culture and education and devoted much of her time to senior programs. Additionally, she was instrumental in starting the City’s Cultural Events program enjoyed by many residents to this day. Sadly, Lila passed away in 2015. Since Senator Gwen Margolis Park was one of Lila’s favorite places to spend time, the City dedicated a garden at the south end of the park in her name on March 16. It will be known as the “City Commissioner Lila Kauffman Botanical Garden.” Trees and plants in that area are identified, along with a plaque in remembrance of Lila. When you have a moment please stop by to honor Lila for her dedication and service to our City.
