Remembering Senator Gwen Margolis

(Tuesday, June 9, 2020) – Today we mourn the loss of a true legend in our community, Gwen Margolis, the first woman in the country to become a Senate president and a staunch advocate for women’s rights. Senator Margolis held an impressive 42-year career in public office where she was the first woman to chair the Finance and Tax Committees in both the House and the Senate and the Senate Appropriations Committee, positions which required great leadership and vision; and was the first woman to chair the Miami-Dade County Commission.

Senator Margolis’ spirit and accomplishments will long be remembered in Sunny Isles Beach. She was an integral player in the city’s incorporation, supporting the citizen group advocating to incorporate the area in the late 1990s, and later appointing the City’s Charter Commission in 1997. The City dedicated our second park to Senator Margolis honoring her legacy.

The next time you walk through or play at Senator Gwen Margolis Park, take a minute to remember the park’s namesake, a strong and vibrant leader who broke barriers and made history in our community and our country.
